I was in Sunway Pyramid (SP) last night and wanted to dine in a new pasta restaurant near the entrance of SP in the new wing. It is set up by Pasta de Waruku Singapore for this Japanese Casual Pasta & Restaurant. When I enter, I was told by the waitress that at the moment, it is by invitation only but nevertheless allowed us to enter as we happen to be there. She further told us that all dining is on the house.

I had crabmeat with fetucine and cocoa shake. Then we shared a green tea ice cream. There are no photos here as the batteries of my digital camera happen to be flat. What we ate was worth more than RM70 with taxes but thanks to their promotion, we dined for free. We happen to be in the right place at the right time. For those who miss out on the free dining, do not fret. You can say pay RM100 and get back RM100 dining voucher which means that you only pay half on 9th May 2008.

The weekend has arrive and this Saturday, I will be staying in G-hotel beside Gurney Plaza. The charge is RM255 without breakfast for superior room with king size bed. I will get to do a lot of window shopping as Gurney Plaza, Penang’s lifestyle shopping mall is nearby. At the moment, it is under expansion, so there will be some construction work going on. Just the other day, I had a set dinner in Manila Place for an affordable price of RM35++. This is because it came with mushroom soup (plenty of chopped button mushrooms in it), bread, butter, appetiser, coffee or tea, salmon teriyaki as one of the many main courses to choose from (quite delicious and big helping) and ice-cream as the dessert.

G-hotel is not like any other hotel that you find here. For one, the interior decoration is very modern and hip. You will not find big vases of flower and hanging chandeliers unlike the older hotels. Here, you will find a very cosy lounge with plenty of sofa sets and cushioned chairs with lighted lampstands beside them. The setting is just like a modern house’s interior, cosy and comfortable. The lighting is dimmed down for that romantic feel. The flooring is raised wooden platform with side lights. I am looking forward to today’s stay and check in time is after 2:00pm.

The place was crowded with diners as usual from breakfast to dinnner. It is opened from 9:00am to 9:00pm everyday and close on Mondays. I had 2 sets of ‘har kau’, deep fried prawn dumpling in soya bean skin, almond balls, and boiled ginseng with water chestnut drink. I have stayed in Vistana many times before and they offer 4 soft white pillows for a king size bed. I just love this hotel for its comfort but the breakfast buffet was not so attractive and we have to queue up for limited tables and chairs. The selections were very few and not too good. Other than that, the overall stay was perfect.

Last night, I had dinner in The Food Loft in Gurney Plaza. And yes, there is a statue of a brown naked woman with a violin. It was part of the decoration and the ambience looks like those of a hotel. The chairs were linen covered soft cushion. You need to get a card each person to order. Simply find your table and take note of your table reservation number. Then order your food and you need to bring your card along to be scanned by the computer for the order. Tell the cook your table number and he will bring the food to your place. After the meal, you card will be scanned again for the payment.

I did not go to Gurney Plaza for quite some time and when I dined in Food Loft last night, I noticed that there were a lot of changes to the refurbishment in the process. On the ground floor outside, there is a new restaurant called Chilis serving something like Mexican food with burgers and tortillas. It was very crowded and poor Breeks shifted further away from near the entrance did not even have a customer. Maybe it was poor planning to shift so far away and being overshadowed by the newly opened Chilis. Tonight, I am going to treat my family to Food Loft as my parents have never been there before.

We also had a bowl of sharks’ fins soup for RM20 each with genuine crab meat and sharks’ fins strips. The soup was more of a thick gravy and double-boiled.

Here is the ambience of the restaurant of Hydro Majestic Hotel in Penang. The hotel has just been refurbished and renovation is still ongoing. After the renovation is completed, the price of stay will definitely increase. In this photo, you can see the new vertical striped round sofas for more comfortable dining experience. The interior decoration is awesome.

Most of the items are cheaper than Sushi King with new innovations like you can refill the cup of green tea via the hot water tap on every table. You can also make orders through an LCD flat monitor stationed on each table with navigations to see the type of food served. It is a pity they don’t have internet, otherwise we could serve and eat simultaneously. They have installed a mouse for diners to click on each option of the screen. Here are some of the servings that’s rather different with avocado and cheese toppings.

The above picture is a mini bowl of yee sang for 1 person from Sushi King at this time of festivity. As for the tradition of eating yee sang during Chinese New Year, this is an invented “tradition” of the Chinese in Malaysia (and Singapore). Yee sang – a dish of raw salmon fish slices mixed with crunchies and other ingredients like julienned cucumber, carrots, turnips plus sauces of various kinds such as plum sauce and honey – is not part of New Year cuisine among the Chinese of Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Part of the attraction or fun of eating yee sang comes from audience participation, i.e., all those present at the dinner table are supplied with chopsticks and are actively encouraged to indulge in boisterous mixing of the ingredients simultaneously. The higher you toss the yee sang, the better luck and fortune for the year. Thus, a feeling of family togetherness and bonding is created at the same time.

Life is stressful. Remedy? Just take ice cream. As for me, it is soothing to the throat and is cathartic, not that I take a lot. I happen to do some window-shopping and stumble upon this exciting ice-cream cake with cute faces and cone hats from Baskin Robbins. And I just couldn’t resist taking a snap shot. I suppose it is not often I get to see cakes like this in Malaysia but being a new outlet in Queensbay, I guess we Penangites are getting luckier.

Here are more ice cream cakes to feast my eyes on and for posterity of the baker’s creativity.

As my bf and I were waiting for our movie entitled Babel, we feasted on ice cream from Swensen’s on the third floor. I ordered a mint flavored one, hence the green color while he had rich chocolate. Food has always appealed to most people and that’s the only reason I like to put up some interesting photos.

Don’t the photo above look tantalizing? Here’s my selection of the buffet of chrome yellow mango pudding, sky blue local dessert (“kuih”), chocolate fondue and cakes. Since I took a bit of almost everything, I share this platter with my sister to cut down on the calories.

Here is my continuation from Part 1. The photos above are bite-size of various flavored cakes coated with cream. There are the strawberry pink cakes, pandan flavored green cakes and the normal vanilla yellow cakes with colorful rice bits. Right at the top tier, not so obvious in the photos are chocolate bon bons or similar to the praline chocolates, but they are cakes as well.

Here’s the delectable buffet consisting of mushroom cream coated steamed salmon, fried nestum prawns, fried mantis prawns in marmite sauce, some fresh vegetables and of course baked crabs. Being careful of my weight, I just had 1 plateful for the round of main dish and another round for fruits, cakes and Haagen Daz ice-cream.

Recently I had buffet dinner in The Cafe in Midlands One Stop or Berjaya Hotel. The food has improved a lot since the Chinese cooks took over from the Malay style of dishes. Here are some photos that I like to post for my own fond memories where I can look back in my old age and pottering around with a cane (hopefully it won’t come to that stage so soon).

Above is the place of flower crab with slices of lemon. They are baked, chilled on ice and served cold. I love the white tangy seafood flavor of the crab that’s tantalizingly smooth. A picture certainly is worth a thousand words and let the photo above speaks for itself.

As the photos were taken around the Hari Raya celebration recently, I have taken some photos of the dessert, mango pudding, cakes, some traditional cookies and others. All in all, the buffet was quite worth is as there were many selection of epicurean food.
