I was watching Miss Universe on Astro yesterday together with my family. It was held in Las Vegas where I have been in 1998 at my own expense after quiting my job. Miss Mexico, dressed in studding red evening gown finally clinched the coveted title from last year’s Miss Universe from Venezuela. As usual, Donald Trump, the property magnate was there – and being the head honcho of the programme. Now I am busy but very happy! I just got paid to write an article for 500 words for a local client who is a eBayer and now in the process of writing the third article. All payments are via Paypal and it is easy peasy. I am happy I took up Computer Technology in Singapore albeit the difficult years but now it pays off.

I am currently in KL for business and yesterday, went to a club to attend to the tennis courts that we are installing at the moment. I was in the library and for about 3 hours, managed to read quite a lot of reading materials like The Star newspapers and Small Business in Malaysia magazine. I also came across interesting articles of the highest paid directors in Malaysia with Genting’s Director being paid the most at around RM87 million per year. That is certainly very exorbitant and I wonder how could the share holders allow the director to be paid so much at their expense for less profits. Dr Mahathir’s son Mukriz Mahathir earns quite a lot at RM2 million per year selling petroluem for his company Kencana Petroleum. Obviously they source the petrol from Petronas that is reserved for umnoputras like him. Both the Chinese and Indians lose out in getting part of the economic pie from Petronas because of the stupid policy that gives everything to the Malays.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Darby Sunrise Development Sdn Bhd (SDSD) has shortlisted architectural companies to send in their designs for its RM1bil mixed development project in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam.

The five are award-winning architectural firms, namely BIG, J&H Boifills, Benoy, DP Architects and Hijjas Kasturi, who are renowned for their forte in commercial developments and excellent achievements.

“Our design participants were selected based on their vast and relevant experience in the comprehensive mixed development, international exposure and commitment to sustainability,” Sunrise Bhd’s executive chairman Datuk Tong Kooi Ong said in a statement yesterday.

The shortlisted architects are expected to present their design concept to the SDSD board of directors on Aug 13, 2010 and the winner would be announced at a later date, he said.

On the project in Bukit Jelutong, which would be a 50-50 joint venture between Sime Darby and Sunrise, he said the company was confident of it being as successful as its other projects.

“Having completed three commercial developments under the Sunrise brand, we are confident of replicating our success in Mont’Kiara to other geographical location, setting the benchmark for creative, contextual design and achieving a sustainable development of long-lasting architectural quality,” he said.

Bukit Jelutong is a self-contained and an excellently planned community spread over 2,200 acres of prime freehold land.

It is well served with a transportation network that link to the other towns in the Klang Valley via expressways.

Meanwhile, SDSD’s mixed development project will cover 21 acres and will be part of the strategically planned Bukit Jelutong Commercial Centre that span 120 acres.

The project will have a gross built-up area approximately 2.7 million sq ft, consisting of 80% for retail namely shop-offices and office-suites and 20% for serviced apartments.

Work will begin next year and the project will be developed in five phases and completed in seven years.

LONDON: British house prices fell last month and retail sales growth slowed abruptly according to two surveys on Tuesday that will raise concern the recovery is losing momentum.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ house price balance fell to 8 in the three months to July the first negative reading in a year from a downwardly revised +8 in the three months to June.

The new buyer enquiries balance fell for the second straight month while property coming on the market increased at its fastest pace since May 2007, leaving surveyors braced for further weakness in the coming months.

A survey from the British Retail Consortium, meanwhile, showed the value of sales last month was just 0.5% higher than a year ago on a like-for-like basis, less than half the 1.2% growth recorded in June.

While part of that weakness may be a natural correction after June’s World Cup-related strength, the compilers of the survey also pointed the finger at the weakening housing market and harsh government spending cuts to come.

“The overriding factor is consumer confidence. It’s fallen recently,” said Stephen Robertson, director-general of the BRC. “Talk of public spending cuts is unsettling customers and they are concentrating on essentials.”

Britain’s Conservative-led coalition government, which came to power in May, aims to slash spending in some areas by a quarter, potentially putting thousands of public sector jobs at risk.

With bank lending still restricted, many doubt whether the private sector will be in a position to pick up the slack.

Britain’s economy grew an unexpectedly strong 1.1% from April to June but most economists think that will be the high-water mark, with growth slowing for the remainder of the year.

The Bank of England will publish new growth and inflation forecasts today and is expected to downgrade its GDP forecasts for both 2011 and 2012.

The Bank has kept UK interest rates at a record low of 0.5% since March 2009 and while one policymaker has been calling for a rise, most analysts expect no change in policy for many months to come.

Although inflation remains well above the 2% target, some analysts think the central bank may even feel compelled to restart its quantitative easing scheme to prevent a relapse into recession.

International Monetary Fund (2009)
Rank Country GDP $

5  Singapore 49,433
6  United States 46,443

The list of top 10 richest countries of the world are sorted by their gross domestic product (GDP) at purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita – the value of all final goods and services produced within a nation in a given year divided by the average (or mid-year) population for the same year. GDP dollar estimates here are derived from purchasing power parity (PPP) calculations. Such calculations are prepared by various organizations, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Comparisons of national wealth are also frequently made on the basis of nominal GDP, which does not reflect differences in the cost of living in different countries (See List of countries by GDP (nominal) per capita below). Using a PPP basis is arguably more useful when comparing generalized differences in living standards on the whole between nations because PPP takes into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of the countries, rather than using just exchange rates which may distort the real differences in income.

I was in KL yesterday and while waiting for a friend, I stood by and watch Nicol David won in 4 sets against Alison Waters, the 5th seeded in women’s squash. Nicol is ranked number 1 for the last 3 years consecutively. She will maintain her rankings for a very long time to come before running her own squash academy, her ambition. I was also given a free brochure on the CIMB Malaysia Open Squash 2009 at the Curve, a big shopping mall in Mutiara Damansara. Though I did not watch the all the sets, I knew Nicol has a big chance to win this match. The local crowd cheered her on. There were many other shoppers as well who watched for a while before continuing with their errands for the weekend on 1st August.

From yesterday’s The Star newspaper report, about 30% of Malaysia’s affluent earn RM4,000 and above. Are you part of the 30%? With the economic doom and gloom and sub-prime crisis in USA with impending global recession, it heralds for austerity measures for the rich and poor alike. The rich will be affected in their potential earnings and drop of value in their shares or unit trusts while the poor will have to suffer by paying more for food and cost of living without any marginal increase in their income. Gone are the days where we can spend impromptu and without much thought. With so many banks in USA going bankrupt like Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, etc, we have to watch out for our hard-earned savings that are thankfully guaranteed 100% by the Malaysian government up to year 2010.

The middle class and lower middle class are tightening their belts and trying to save whatever they can. They eat out less often, and car pool to save cost on gas. People need to change their lifestyles to suit the bad times in order to get by with their same income. And in the recent news, pirate in Somalia have hijacked 2 Malaysian ship and demanding millions of dollars for the release. Even a French yatch got hijacked with 2 French men in the latest incident. And USA is helping Malaysia in negotiating with the pirates. Thanks for the goodwill help.

My father’s church friend got kidnapped in the car park of her apartment and was blind folded for 2 days. She was driven to the ATM to withdraw her money, at a maximum of RM5,000 per day. Therefore, never keep too much money in the bank that can be withdrawn. And yesterday, she called my dad in a very weak voice to call the parish priest to pray over hear. The ordeal of the kidnapping made her a total wreck. She is now warded in a private hospital. One of her eye is swollen due to the very tight blind folding. She was captured by 3 indian guys in the carpark and while being blind folded, she could hear malay and chinese conversation of her captors. People are desperate and will do anything to get money – whether legally or illegally. This kidnapping was mentioned in the local press too to warn the public and not to be alone when going out.

It is a day of reckoning when DAP (Democratic Action Party) trounced Gerakan and BN in the recently concluded Malaysian 2008 General Election. Now we have a new Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who was sworn in yesterday to be the people’s spokesperson. No longer do we have an academic Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon who was muted about the NEP (New Economic Policy) and could hardly fight for the Chinese rights. NEP was implemented by the second prime minister of Malaysia Tun Razak. It is biased and unfair to the Chinese and the Indians while enriching the Malays, more likely those in positions of political power.

To quote from Datuk Lim Keng Yaik, it is scary to see the UMNO Youth president, Datuk Hishamuddin wielding the keris (Malay sword) in their general assembly. This should stop. No wonder the Barisan Nasional lost quite a lot of seats. There has been much corruption, cronyism, and insensitive remarks made in the past by UMNO members. And we Chinese have to learn to bear with it and try to get along with them because they are in power. Hopefully with DAP in charge of Penang now, this will no longer be the case.

The results of the Malaysian 2008 General Elections took everyone by surprise. Incumbent Barisan lost 4 more states – Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor to the opposition. What has really happened? There are some plausible reasons to this. When our former deputy prime minister, Anwar released the Lingam’s video to the press near election time, it was very destructive for the goverment to know that a common lawyer like Mr Lingam could broker the appointment of judges in high court. There was much corruption with the ‘Correct, Correct, Correct’ lawyer offering free tours, houses, handphones to top judges. This show how corrupt the judiciary is.

Secondly, churches were not allowed to use the word ‘Allah’ in their printing materials and in their preaching. What the heck! The word ‘Allah’ was used before Islam came to Malaysia. It shows how narrow minded the government is. And Bibles were confiscated recently by the customs that belong to a Baptist church. Looks like the citizen’s freedom is being eroded bit by bit.

People were also fedup especially the non-Malays of the NEP (New Economic Policy) favouring the bumiputras or simply the Malays. All government contracts are given to bumiputra companies only leaving out the other races, the Chinese and the Indians. No wonder Lee Kuan Yew said we were being marginalized just because we are more hardworking, diligent and rich. Most of the common Chinese in Penang have felt the pinch of NEP and they are not as rich as before. People are angry and therefore, don’t expect the rakyat to vote for you when you are not fair to all races to begin with. You preach one thing, but your actions speak another.

Since Penang is now in the hands of the opposition, I hope future tenders will be fair to all races and not solely for bumiputras only. Hopefully my company will be able to participate in sports open tenders meant for anyone and any race on a fairer system. I also hope that goverment planned projects to develop Penang like the monorail, Penang’s second bridge, Penang Outer Ring Road and the like will not be delayed any further by the government since the rakyat or citizens have chosen the opposition to govern them. Congratulations to Lim Guan Eng and Karpal Singh of DAP, Datin Seri Wan Azizah of PKR and the other victorous candidates.
