
In just 1 year, Malaysia’s 40 richest business people increased their collective worth by a whopping 65 per cent to US$43 billion (RM147 billion) from US$26 billion last year. Forbes Asia’s 2007 listing of the country’s wealthiest had 8 newcomers, including Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir with wealth worth US$220 million.
Mokhzani’s F1 “rival” property tycoon Ong Beng Seng, who lives in Singapore and the man who sealed a Formula One spot for the republic, not only made it to the list but is also the richest newcomer with wealth of US$580 million. Mokhzani is chairman of Sepang International Circuit, the venue of the Malaysian Grand Prix. Mokhzani is at No. 28 in the list while Ong is at 12.
Sugar King Tan Sri Robert Kwok Hock Nien, 84, remains Malaysia’s richest, worth US$7.6 billion, up from US$5.6 billion last year, Forbes said.
