Today, after church service, I decided to pay my 93-year-old paternal granny a visit in the Buddhist old folks’ home in Bayan Lepas. Before the visit, I bought my nonagenarian granny some flowers, a bouquet of faux roses and a stalk of fresh sunflower, ice-cream with chocolate topping from McDonalds and a box of bon-bon chocolates. The cost was about RM50. Thanks to blog money from PayPerPost, I can now afford to splurge a little on my aged granny. She was sitting in the common lounge adjusting her blouse when I saw her. Granny was happy to see me and I guess she could still recognize who I was.
I fed her the ice-cream, talked to her, gave her the box of 8 bon-bon chocolates and RM100. I guess she feels more secure having some pocket money of her own and occasionally pay RM10 to the temple to request for prayers.
My granny was widowed young at around 27 and single-handedly brought up 4 children by herself by selling “laksa” – fish salad soup. She had to wake up at 4am every morning to prepare food to sell – pound lots of raw onions and remove fish bones for the laksa – a very tedious process and laborious work. With much tenacity, she had to struggle hard all by herself to put bread on the table for her 4 kids. I just pray that granny will eventually know Jesus and have a better life.
