While Singapore does not have any natural resources, we cannot ignore this squeaky clean city state. It can flex its economic muscles over Malaysia which has plenty of natural resources. Hence, Singapore has to import talented human resources to generate wealth. A case in point; let’s say two business people, Old boss A and Young boss B are tendering for the same building project. If Old boss A lose out to Young boss B, they can still work together and support each other in business. Even Old boss A can humble himself and sell say some material badly needed by Young boss B. In the end, both parties still contribute to Singapore’s economy. Despite differences in personality, and thanks to the compulsory National Service training, these two men have learnt to work as a team in business and not to sabotage each other. The bottom line is still dollars and cents.
Take another case in Malaysia. If boss C lose out the project to newcomer boss D in a tender, boss C having the old mentality will not support boss D in any way. Not even selling some urgent material needed by Boss D. This is about pride and who can get the work delivered. Because of this non-corporation, some of the Malaysians are divided in doing business and are intensive competitors instead of compatriots. This old mentality of dominating a certain business niche no longer applies with the internet where distribution is global and borderless. If Singapore had this kind of mentality of doing business, it would not withstand the pressures of the business world.
