Twice a Champion

Nicol David, twice a champion for Women's World Squash title

It was almost an inhuman feat. Nicol David, Malaysia’s world champion of squash, fought for a marathon 98 minutes before retaining her title, becoming one of only four players to have defended the title. And when the job was done, Nicol showed her human side. She broke down in tears. StarSport pays tribute to our world champion.

Malaysia’s Nicol David lived up to her billing as world No 1 and claimed her second title here on Sunday. But it was hard work. Both Nicol and fellow finalist Natalie Grinham entered the final with fantastic records of not dropping a game in the earlier rounds. And the final swung from end to end and after a 98-minute marathon, Nicol finally sealed it 1-9, 9-7, 3-9, 9-5, 9-2. Nicol could not believe that she had won for the second time.

“I am so pleased with the way I played. It took so much to be patient, to stay in there and work it to the end as well,” said Nicol. However, Nicol showed that she was only human after all when she broke down in tears right after winning the final point of the match. “I got so emotional, I didn’t realize how much pressure I was under until the last point. It sort of hit me at one shot. I was so glad I won it,” added Nicol.
