I was a big spender when I was working and staying in Singapore. Afterall, in this rich city state, you cannot help but follow the culture of everyone power dressing-up with branded stuffs from head to toe. Yes, I am not joking. I was drawn into this lavish spending, buying and using branded goods from Lancome liquid lip gloss, to Braun Buffel handbag, Ferragamo shoes, Guess jeans, Nike shoes, Carven watch, Clinique cheek blusher, Shisheido eye blusher, Clarins skin care SPF protection, Prescriptives eye liner and so on. Though I looked rich and affluent like a successful executive on the outside, but I was almost broke inside. My bank account at one time, was left with only 1 figure! I was desperate and had to borrow money from my dad. It was like, the day I got my 4-figure salary, that’s the time I start to buy and pay off rental and other utilities. In the end, I don’t have much left by the end of the month. This was a bad habit.
It was when I returned to Penang and start all over again, did I manage to start saving up some money since then. Now I make it a point to save at least a thousand if possible after giving my parents their monthly allowance of RM500, tithing 10% of my net salary to church and the rest, I put in the bank and fixed deposits for my retirement. Now staying in Penang, Malaysia, I don’t have to keep up with the Joneses and humbly wear a t-shirt and normal pants when I go out. I don’t have to prove myself anymore.
