Stormbreaker, the Movie
The Junior James Bond gets his break on the big screen as Anthony Horowitz’ Alex Rider stories get the British Hollywood makeover. A star-studded cast assemble as Alex discovers his spying legacy and is put to work investigating Darrius Sayle, whose line of Stormbreaker computer systems are soon to feature in every classroom around the world. What nefarious scheme is Sayle cooking?
Cast a straight-laced fifteen year-old, who looks like this job is saving him from a career in modelling, open with an action-packed segment involving Ewan McGregor and a car chase, and serve up some PG-13 super-spy antics. Fantastic. But throw in Bill Nighy and Missi Pyle and then include a comedy fight that choreographs with scenes on a TV in the background. Is it a comedy? Is it an action drama? No it’s Stormbreaker, the latest in a long line of young-adult literature to find a home on the big screen as soon as investors saw dollar signs in Harry
Potter’s eyes. And it fails spectacularly to balance the two genres it seems keen to court, failing where most do by serving up just enough adult themes to woo its audience while patronising them with cheap kid-comedy cop-outs.
The story, adapted from Anthony Horowitz’ hugely successful book by the author himself, clearly loses much in the translation. Anyway, this action flick was entertaining to watch which I did last night.
