Intel’s First Dual-core Itanium 2 chip

Intel's first dual-core itanium chip
Intel’s Itanium 2 9000 series processor is undoubtedly built for the mission-critical enterprise computing environment. The new dual-core chip is said to offer double the performance and up to 20 per cent lower power consumption compared to the existing Itanium 2 single-core chip.

Itanium 2 9000 series features 1.72 billion transistors that allow Intel designers to deliver new features such as Intel’s cache safe technology, enhanced machine check architecture and error correction mode (ECC) memory with mirroring and redundancy capabilities.

The dual-core Itanium 2 9000 series, which ships next month, includes the 9050 1.6-gigahertz 24M 533/400-megahertz (US$3,692), 9040 1.6GHz 18M 533/400 MHz (US$1,980), 9030 1.6GHz 8M 533/400MHz (US$1,552), 9020 1.42GHz 12M 533/400MHz (US$910) and 9015 1.4GHz 12M 400MHz (US$749).
